Fall is a time to plant acorns. The ISEU Forest campaign “Oaks of Eurasia” program for oakgrove restoration initiated series of acorn plantings in different regions of Russia. NGOs and groups of activists gather acorns and the plant them on carefully selected places, where the oakgroves used to grow, but were destroyed by human activities.
Such plantings were done in Nizhny Novgorod - traditionally on steep slope near the river Volga, and in different regions of Chuvashia republic. Chuvashia is a traditional oakgrove area.
Besides planting into the wild nature, oak nurseries are planted near the schools. School children and their teachers eagerly participate in the oak restoration program, as this is a happy educational process. Such nursery planting happened in city of Vladimir. There Students Nature Guard Group “Growing Point” organized a whole oak celebration. School students, besides gathering and planting acorns, learne a lot about oaks as trees, history of the oakgroves in Europe and specifically in Vladimir region, and, of course, how to care about their oak nursery. After work, children played educational games, composed tales and poems about oaks, drew pictures.
The plantings will continue in November in Moscow region.
